Abstract
Electrochemical restoration techniques as cathodic protection (CP), electrochemical chloride removal (ECR) and electrochemical realkalization (ER) are non-destructive alternatives to the conventional concrete repair methods. The three techniques are presented with practical applications. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
Objective
Goal of the course is a sound basis of the fundamentals of the electrochemical restoration techniques, to know the necessary conditions for a succesful application of these techniques and to get an insight into the technical details of their application. The students shall be able to judge the application of the electrochemical restoration techniques and to elaborate a rough project for the application. The course requires active participation of the students. The use and application of the electrochemical restoration techniques cathodic protection (CP), electrochemical chloride removal (ECR) and electrochemical realkalisation (ER) is presented with case studies that are discussed together. Once during the course every student has to prepare a presentation for a specific subject.

The course is structured as follows 1. Basics (electrochemical reactions / current flow in concrete) 2. Electrochemical chloride removal (Laboratory and field experience, applications, case studies) 3. Electrochemical realkalisation (Laboratory and field experience, applications, case studies) 4. Cathodic protection (Laboratory and field experience, applications, CP with galvanic anodes) 5. Comparison with conventional restoration (Advantages, costs, durability) 6. Potential for application in reinforced concrete structures (incl. prestressed or post-tensioned structures)
