The Science and Poltics of International Freshwater Management
The Science and Politics of International Freshwater Management
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:56:32
Abstract
Most of the world's large rivers and lakes are shared by two or more countries. Thus, sustainable use of freshwater hinges on successful international cooperation. In part I, participants familiarize themselves with international freshwater management and acquire basic skills for assessing its success or failure. In part II, they analyze specific transboundary river and lake management cases.
Objective
Acquire the skills for assessing and explaining variation in success or failure in international freshwater management.
Content
Freshwater is crucial to all societies and ecosystems. Most of the world’s large rivers and lakes, which are the principal sources of freshwater, are shared by two or more countries. Consequently, sustainable use of freshwater often hinges on successful international cooperation that integrates scientific knowledge into political action. In the first part of this research seminar (SS 2004) the participants will familiarize themselves with key issues in international freshwater management and the research methodology to be used. In the second part (WS 2004/05) they will analyze specific transboundary river and lake management cases in a comparative perspective. Organisation: The seminar will take place in SS 2004 and WS 2004/05, with four meetings during each semester. ETH PhD students will receive four credit points for this seminar, contingent on full participation and acceptance of their research paper (to be written in teams of 2 students). More details can be found on http://www.eawag.ch/research_e/apec/seminars . For registration (required, first-come-first-serve principle) and further information contact: [email protected] .
