Objective

The role of microorganisms in the natural environment is documented and their interactions in different ecosystems is highlighted. The interactions and connectons of environmental microbial processes to biotechnological processes will be demonstrated.

Overview on methods used in microbial ecology; key position of microorganisms in natural materials cycles; interactions between fungi and plants; mycorrhiza; interactions between fungi and animals; fungi and wood; soil microorganisms; microbial degradation of environmental chemicals; microbial life under extreme conditions; microbial ecokinetics; gene technology and ecology; release of genetically manipulated microorganisms
