Fundamentals of Biology IIB: Neurobiology
GL der Biologie IIB: Teil Neurobiologie
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 14:57:07
Abstract
Introduction into the development of the nervous system and into the function of the adult nervous system. Furthermore, the outline of visual processing, and an introduction to the phenomenon of human amnesia and theories of human and animal memory.
Objective
Understanding the development of the nervous system and the function of the adult nervous system, the outlines of visual processing, the declarative memory in amnesic patients and animal models of amnesia.
Content
The lectures of Prof. Schwab and Prof. Neuhauss provide an introduction to the development of the nervous system and the function of the adult nervous system: Histology of the nervous system (cell types and function), functional anatomy of the nervous system (anatomical composition, motor systems, sensory systems, limbic system and emotions, ascending activating tracks), build-up and physiology of the nervous system (electrophysiologic events, signal transduction and neurotransmittors), development of the nervous system (organogenesis and early development, cell division and migration, nerve fibre growth and target recognition, build-up and maturation of neuronal networks). The lecture of Prof. Martin gives an outline of the visual processing and explores the following questions: What is it in the visual system that stops you from reading the newspaper in the peripheral vision? What do you need to move your eyes? How much of your visual world is real and how much is a creation of your own brain? The last of the Neurobiology lectures (Prof. Feldon) focuses on the behavioural biology of memory. It provides an introduction to the phenomenon of human amnesia and theories of human and animal memory.
