Content

Atomic structure and the structure of matter: atomic theory, elementary particles, atomic nuclei, radioactivity, nuclear reactions. Atomic orbitals and energy levels: ionisation energies, atomic spectroscopy, term schemes. Quantum mechanical atom model: wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle, Schrödinger's equation, the hydrogen atom, construction of the periodic table of elements. Chemical bonding: ionic bonding, covalent bonding, molecular orbitals. Equations of state: ideal gases, kinetic gas theory, Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution, real gases.
