Abstract

Synthesis, properties, and applications of mesoscopic (micro- and nanomaterials, metallic glasses) and multiphase metallic systems (light metals and high-performance alloys).

Objective

To impart detailed knowledge of the synthesis, properties, and applications of micro- and nanomaterials, metallic glasses, and light metals.

Content

The course focuses on the synthesis and processing of microstructured, nanostructured and amorphous metallic materials using wet-chemical and physical routes. It details how unique magnetic, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties are achieved in materials of mesoscopic dimensions. Typical characterization techniques for these materials are presented, together with various applications. Students are also provided with a practical knowledge of the synthesis, processing and characterization of these materials in our laboratories (Metal Physics and Technology; Multifunctional Materials). In addition, the course focuses on selected concepts of the physical metallurgy of light metals. Here two excursions to a research center and a company in the area of light metals will be offered.
