Within political science the notion of networks can be used in theories of the state, as a structuralist approach and as a method called social network analysis. The course introduces the students to the different concepts of networks from a historical and theoretical perspective in the first part and then illustrates the application of networks for various subfields of political science.

The course introduces the basic concepts and methods of social network analysis. The techniques will be applied directly in the course. Besides practical problems regarding data collection, we will do exercises with software for social network analysis and graphical displays of networks. At the end of this course students should be able to apply the method to a seminar paper or master thesis.

The course provides an overview of (neo)-institutionalist approaches in political science. Besides introductory parts such as the various definitions of institutions we can find in the literature, the focus is on normative, sociological, economic and historical approaches. We will cover issues such as the birth and change of institutions, effects as well as reforms of institutions.
