The aim of this course is to foster an interest of the correlation between building culture, building technics, design and construction. What are the design possibilities that generate a certain look, impact or "branding" of buildings? Many case studies within the tendency of "reducing the mass" and "sustainable design" inspire the interdisciplinary work of architects and civil engineers.

Architecture has been aimed at defying solid mass. Spaces have increasingly opened up, walls have become thinner until they metamorphosed into a mere skin and new materials and techniques, imported from automobile, shipbuilding, aviation and aerospace industries, have been translated into construction methods. The lectures point out history, actuality and future point of views.

Within three elective courses the students need to fulfill an elective work (seminar work). Elective works serve the independent way of dealing with the contents of the according elective course.
