Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:24:20
Abstract
The course "Comparative Representative Democracy" presents and discusses comparative, international parliamentary research concentrating on decision-making in parliamentary systems. The main focus is on empirical-analytical approaches mainly using quantitative data. The discussions are supplemented with own data analyses of the students which are conducted and counselled via online learning tools.
Objective
After the course the students should have a thorough overview of topics of international parliamentary research such as party group cohesion, party discipline, leadership in parliaments, candidate recruitment, and the roles of parliamentarians. Furthermore, they will have a profound knowledge about the workings of various parliaments such as the Swiss, English, European and Swiss parliament. With this theoretical knowledge about comparative parliamentary research and the empirical knowledge about parliamentarians (also due to the use of some documentary films), they will be able to discuss current studies of parliamentary research with special regard to their research question and their research methods.Additionally, they will be able to carry out own research questions related to parliamentary politics (assistance provided by course staff).
