Abstract

The program comprises four subjects: design, history and theory, videoand media and urban nature. The focus is on design, which amounts to 50% of the scheduled time. In the other subjects, students deepen theirinsight into the scientific and theoretical aspects of landscapearchitecture and explore the creative use of media, especiallyvideo, for design.

Objective

- The capacity to produce innovative landscape design together with an understanding for spatial conceptualisation at a variety of scales - Improved knowledge of the theory and history of landscape architecture, including critical thinking - The ability to develop new techniques for representation and communication incorporating new media - A broader understanding of processes in urban nature and the influence of time as the fourth component of spatial design - Knowledge of contemporary techniques in landscape and garden design.

Content

Studies will focus on landscape architectural design within contemporary landscape space. The fundamental problem set guiding the programme will for instance question traditional boundaries between town and country. Considering how can landscape architecture and the design in nature be endowed with new meaning? Within the framework of postgraduate studies, new open spaces will be defined and discussed in the light of design, function and ecology. Participants will arrive at new solutions that are open to a broader cultural understanding of nature. Over the course of the year, participants are expected to develop and deepen: The capacity to produce innovative landscape design together with an understanding for spatial conceptualisation at a variety of scales; Improved knowledge of the theory and history of landscape architecture, including critical thinking; The ability to develop new techniques for representation and communication incorporating new media; A broader understanding of processes in urban nature and the influence of time as the fourth dimension of spatial design; Knowledge of contemporary techniques in landscape and garden design. To further develop landscape architectural design across such a broad range of questions exchanges with other specialised fields such as architecture, structural engineering, the natural sciences and the arts and humanities will be promoted. The MAS LA is not only interdisciplinary, but also international. It will address key questions on the state of the art of landscape architectural design.
