A range of fundamental processes have transformed European societies in the course of the 19th and the 20th centuries. This lecture series looks a several key aspects of these modernization processes and ask about their continuing relevance for our times . The regional focus lies on the Britain, where these processes took place for the first time.
The course offers an introduction to the history of modern Japan from the 19th century to the present and focuses key topics including the Meiji-Restoration, colonialism, and the occupation period. It explores the modern history of Japan in particular through perspectives of race, class, gender, and technology.
The fortnightly colloquium provides a forum for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to present and discuss their current work. Half of the slots are reserved for presentations by invited external scholars.
