Abstract

Waste Recycling Technology (WRT) depicts technologies used to produce secondary raw materials from various waste streams. The course focuses on the mechanical and biological processes while also considering new concepts such as AI and chemical recycling.

Objective

After this course, students can explain mechanical, biological, chemical and pyrometallurgical waste recycling technologies. Furthermore, students can decide on suitable technologies for specific waste materials. The Swiss waste recycling schemes for household waste, building and construction waste and industrial wastes can be described connecting the technological knowledge with background knowledge on waste management schemes.

Content

The foci will be mechanical and biological recycling processes of solid wastes including biogenic waste. In addition, pyrometallurgical treatment processes and chemical recycling processes as well as newer technologies such as the use of AI for waste recycling will be discussed. Mechanical waste treatment: separation technologies, properties of particles, flow sheet basics, assessment of separation success Biological green waste treatment: composting and anaerobic digestion
