Energy and Mobility
Energie und Mobilität
The lecture ‘Energy and Transportation’ imparts profound knowledge of energy- and environment-related difficulties of the intersection of energy and transportation with focus on the motorized individual traffic. The students gain the ability to approach energy- and environment-related problems with special consideration of the demand side, and to evaluate possible solutions.
The course teaches to view local energy solutions as part of the larger energy system. Because it powers all sectors, local changes can have consequences reaching well beyond one sector. While we explore all sectors, we put a particular emphasis on mobility and its unique challenges. We not only cover engineering aspects, but also policymaking and behavioral economics.
Framework Conditions and Transport Behaviour
Rahmenbedingungen und Mobilitätsverhalten
This module addresses the demand for new business models for future transport systems. Why and in what way do people wish to be mobile? What are the economic, social and legal framework conditions, and how will these develop? What approaches leading to new value propositions will follow?
Modeling of Human-Environment Systems: Introduction to various modeling methods
Modellierung von Mensch-Umwelt-Systemen: Einführung in die verschiedenen Modellierungsmethoden
This lecture provides an overview of existing modeling methods for Human-Environment Systems. The term "model" is defined, model classifications and the areas of applicance of several methods (e.g. system dynamics, multi-agent systems, spatial modeling) are discussed. Goal is not to personally program models, but to be able to judge which type of model is suitable for which research questions.
The technology pathways for the energy transition of 5 key energy demand sectors are covered: Which energy carriers and technologies are potentially available in time, at which costs? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What technological, financial and regulatory barriers exist? Which are the “tipping points” and suitable policies for the decarbonization of these sectors?
Transport Systems: Dynamics and Future Developments
Mobilitätssysteme: Dynamik und zukünftige Entwicklungen
Interrelationships and dynamic change and the impact of these on mobility and transportation are being investigated in this module. The module addresses desirable future development of urban transport systems in Switzerland by covering and critically examining authentic, existing transport scenarios (e.g. ARE) in an exercise setting which deploys backcasting.
