Resilience - Beyond Risk Management
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:35
Abstract
In today’s world we are challenged by multiple disruptions, uncertainty, frequent changes and higher demands. How to become more resilient in this volatile and ambiguous environment? How to cultivate individual and organizational resilience?Let’s rethink our approaches to risk management and develop strategies to promote resilience for a future of sustainable inclusive growth.
Objective
The objective of the 3-day seminar is to explore the concept of resilience, both on the psychological level (for individuals, teams and organizations), as well as for businesses e.g. along supply chains - How does resilience differ from risk management or business continuity management? - How to foster resilience whether in a team or in corporation on a short (operational), a medium (tactical) and a longer-term strategic time scale? - What capabilities and tools help to measure and then also manage resilience? The seminar deals with resilience from a practical perspective, close to business reality, with experts from diverse industries presenting. You will have the opportunity to apply and anchor your learnings in group assignments.
Content
Resilience can be seen as a fundamental attempt to create a new understanding of how people, business and nature interact, influence each other and adapt to change. It refers to a system’s capacity to cope with change and evolve. It is about how shocks and disturbances such as climate change stimulate renewal and adaptation. If Resilience is the ability to survive and thrive in a complex, ambiguous environment, are our known coping mechanisms such as risk management and business continuity management fit for purpose? This 3-day block course brings in the views of external experts as guest speakers with different professional backgrounds such as hospitals, supply chains, risk & insurance management as well as challenges from e.g. climate change to cyber risk, some of them as practical cases for group work. During the course we will - Explore the concept of resilience together, - characterize systems as well as their environments and - seek to influence systems and characteristics; from contrasting positions such as resilience vs. efficiency to combining resilience and efficiency. Understanding, leveraging, and managing resilience in natural, organizational, and business contexts: - bringing it into the organizational and business context: measuring resilience and making it a competitive advantage. - from the personal Individual leadership role to the organizational context. As such the block course - builds on critical thinking and reflection about the current environments and how it can be changed and influenced under uncertainty, beyond the familiar deterministic approach to forecasting and planning. - builds skills, which, in the light of the forthcoming transformation of the social and business environment could change and transcend the paradigm of the efficient but vulnerable system and environment. Day 1: Intro on understanding Resilience; resilient leadership, psychological and organizational resilience Day 2: Exploring Resilience in business context Day 3: Global context & presentations of your group assignments You will be expected to apply the learning throughout the seminar and in a final group assignment.
