European Strategy in a Changing World

Abstract
This course introduces students to cutting-edge research on European strategy since the end of the Cold War: Historical, theoretical, and conceptual foundations for studying European strategy across defense, economics and trade, cyber, and energy domains. Investigation in European strategy to key international relationships with the US, China, European neighbourhood, and the developing world.
Objective
The course objectives are as follows: 1.To introduce students to cutting-edge research on European strategy in a changing international environment, with a focus on the period after the Cold War. 2.To critically engage the students with innovative theoretical and conceptual research tools, drawn from the intersection of the fields of International Relations, Political Science, European Studies, and Strategic Studies. 3.To engage the students with research methods to conduct empirical research with primary and secondary sources on European strategy in changing international environment. 4.To critically engage students with European strategy’s security and economic dimensions — and their interlinkage in the “trade-security nexus” and effect on the prospects for conflict. 5.To critically engage student with Europe’s relationships with key states and regions in the world: the US, China, Europe’s “Neighbourhood”, and the developing world. 6.To introduce the students to the European students and actors involved in the strategy formation process. 7.To further develop and nurture the students’ ability to generate written work oral presentations. 8.To nurture transferable skills for their future work environment, including independent and teamwork, writing analysis, presentation skills, and research skills. 9.To enhance the student’s ability to work independently and as a team. To enhance the student’s ability of critical thinking and nurture a sense of becoming a lifelong learner also after the course. And to nurture students’ intellectual skills through information and data gathering and analysis and research on primary and secondary sources. 10.By the conclusion of the module, the students should be able to set up academic research projects, by independently creating their own research design and questions on European strategy and conduct theoretically strong and empirically rich research on the topic. Assessment: Active participation (20%), presentation of research paper design and draft (20%), and final research paper (60%).
