Abstract

The course gives an introduction into bone biology and provides an overview on current research methods and clinical approaches. Emphasis is put on skeletal development and metabolism, osteoporosis as well as fracture healing. Each topic is structured into three parts: basics, research and clinics.

Objective

After completing the Bone Biology course, students will be able to: (1) Remember and apply basics in bone biology and disease (2) Remember clinical features and surgical approaches (3) Select adequate research methods and approaches (4) Evaluate publications on topics presented in the lecture

Content

The course provides an overview of bone biology including cellular mechanism, metabolism and mechanoregulation. The acquired knowledge is applied to clinically-relevant topics such as skeletal development, osteoporosis and fracture healing. For each topic, we will share examples from our research and clinical experience combined with interactive sessions. A guest lecture with demonstration will provide insight into translational aspects concerning implant design and veterinary applications. A site visit to the OR-X facility will allow for hands on experience of surgical applications (OR-X, Translational Center for Surgery, Balgrist University Hospital).
