Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:24:20
Abstract
This course is designed as a ‘refresher’ to elementary statistics for MACIS students. We start off by revising descriptive statistics and basic probability theory. Furthermore, the course will enable you to get a first understanding of hypotheses testing and of bivariate and multivariate regression analysis. The main goal is to prepare MACIS students for the Methods II course in semester two.
Objective
Students learn to apply descriptive statistics to substantive problems of the social sciences. In addition, they are introduced to inferential statistics. Topics covered include measures of association, point estimation, hypothesis testing, and a short revision of calculus and probability. Finally, students develop an intuitive understanding of regression.
