Physics Lab 3
Physikpraktikum 3
This laboratory course provides basic training of experimental skills. These are experimental design, implementation, measurement, data analysis and interpretation, as well as error analysis. The experimental work has to be complemented by a concise written report, which trains the scientific writing skills.Manuals for the individual experiments are available in English.

Advanced Solid State Physics Experiments
Festkörperphysik für Vorgerückte
Implementation of experiments in condensed matter physics. Planning, design, realisation, evaluation, and interpretation of the experiments.
The lecture discusses the basic physics concepts of quantum dot charge and spin qubits from the experimental viewpoint. Among them are the Coulomb and Spin blockade, qubit manipulation techniques including elements of circuit QED, relaxation and decoherence mechanisms as well as qubit read-out techniques.
Experimental Semester Project in a Group of the Physics Department
Experimentelle Semesterarbeit in einer Gruppe des Physikdepartements
The aim of the project is to give the student experience in working in a research environment, carrying out physics experiments, analysing and interpreting the resulting data.

Introduction to Solid State Physics
Einführung in die Festkörperphysik
The course provides an introduction to solid state physics, covering several topics that are later discussed in more detail in other more specialized lectures. The central topics are: solids and their lattice structures; interatomic bindings; lattice dynamics, electronic properties of insulators, metals, semiconductors, transport properties, and magnetism.
Part A:Introduction to mechanics: kinematics, Newton's Laws, energy and momentum, rotation of solid bodies, movement in a central field, oscillations and waves.Part B: electrostatics, electric current, simple circuits, magnetic field, magnetic induction, Maxwell's equations, elements of optics.
The course treats the fundamental aspects of modern Electronics, Quantum mechanics and Atomic physics.
Physics II
Physik II
Introduction to theory of waves, electricity and magnetism. This is the continuation of Physics I which introduced the fundamentals of mechanics.
Lecture; students are introduced to quantum mechanics for phenomena on the nanoscale. Motivated by the limits of classical physics, they will learn the basic mathematical tools and concepts in order to describe quantum phenomena. As application, practical examples in electronics, optics and mechanics are studied which can only be understood using quantum physics.
