Case studies
Fallstudien aus der Praxis
Objective of the course is to provide students with insight regarding topics, which graduated computer scientists work on in their practice and to thus create a bridge between university and practice. Representatives from practice - typically ETH-graduates - present actual case studies, in which participants are encouraged to think through and solve the respective case study.

Concurrent Programming 1: Principles and Introduction
Foundations of Computer Science: Computational Science
Grundlagen der Informatik: Wissenschaftliches Rechnen
The courses "Foundations of Computer Science" cover material that all students of computer science should know. The courses are self study courses and based on material which we assume that students know from their Bachelor program. The main aim of these courses is to ensure that all our Master students have a solid knowledge all over computer science and not just in their area of expertise.

Mobile Systems Architectures I
Mobile System-Architekturen I
Introduction to the foundations of mobile systems architectures with particular focus on mobile end devices such as hand phones and PDAs, their operating systems and local communication capabilities. Become acquainted with development and simulation environments. Realisation of practical application examples.
Mobile Systems Architectures II
Mobile System-Architekturen II
Introduction to the foundations of mobile systems architectures with particular focus on currently deployed and future remote communication technologies and mobile application services. Become acquainted with development and simulation environments. Realisation of practical application examples.
Operating Systems
Betriebssysteme
The topic of this course are operating systems, with an emphasis on concepts. In particular, the course will treat in detail the two main tasks of modern operating systems: resource management and runtime support for programs. Some keywords are: boot process, file systems, memory allocation and garbage collection, processes and threads, device drivers, runtime type support, virtual systems.
System Construction
Systembau
The lecture's goal is teaching of knowledge and skills needed for building custom operating systems and runtime environments. Relevant topics will be studied in detail at the example of sufficiently simple systems that have been built at the Institute in the past, ranging from purpose-oriented single processor real-time systems up to generic system kernels for Symmetric Multi Processors.
