4D-Geodesigning Urban Transformation
This interdisciplinary blended course (50% online, 50% in-class) tackles urban planning, design, and policy issues in various global case study cities. Each semester focuses on a different city. Students reconstruct land use rules using 3D models and simulate 4D urban transformation scenarios for 500-meter-radius neighborhoods, which will be presented and discussed in class.

This course tackles critical urban planning issues through advanced technology for analysis and communication. Students actively engage with building and zoning regulations, involving the reconstruction, reformulation, and simulation/virtualization in web-based 4D urban models. Ongoing exchanges through peer review activities in class enrich the learning experience.

The project addresses critical issues of urban planning by using cutting-edge technology for analysis and communication. Students actiely engage with building and zoning regulations ((i) reconstruct, (ii) reformulate and (iii)simulate/virtualise in web-based 4D urban models) as well as maintain an ongoing exchange through (peer) review activities in class.

In the turf war between quantitative and qualitative methods, we appear as mediators bridging the two sides. How can quantitative and qualitative methods complement each other rather than work in opposition?We will encourage reflections on this by developing new forms of urban literacy integrating ethnographic research methods with quantitative data, filmmaking and other forms of digital media

A special focus on the processes and mechanisms of (in)formal urban forms and systems will characterise the research. How can we give that shape through film?Students will respond to this questions through short, experimental films that will aim to articulate how cities today may be reimagined and reappropriated by its inhabitants in new and inventive ways.

Giving audiovisual form to the concept of ‘circular economy’, we will encourage students to think about the socio-economic relations that constitute our cities, through the use of digital media. Students will develop new forms of urban literacy in the process, combining ethnographic social research methods with filmmaking (using smartphones and Adobe Premiere Pro) and other forms of digital media.
