The lectures analyses the trajectories of racism and anti-racism from the late 15th to the early 20th century. In an effort to go beyond the usual focus on anti-semitism, various forms of racist thought and practices linked to European and extra-European imperialism are scrutinised. Particular emphasis lies on scientific racism in the 19th/20th centuries and the counter-discourses it triggered.

The course provides and overview over 100 years of Jazz history. The first part focuses on the emergence of Jazz in the USA with a strong emphasis on its relation with African-American politics. The 2nd part analyzes the adaptation of Jazz in Europe, Asia and Africa. Here too musical history is analysed in the political and social contexts of the time.

Errors, deceptions and lies are phenomena, which are part of science, its application and interpretation. This lecture-course of the lecturers of Knowledge-section of DGESS discusses these phenomena in different scientific disciplines, and different times and in different political contexts.

Each session focuses on a particular commodity and explores how its production, trade and consumption was entangled with important political, social and cultural developments. Taken together, the case studies (ranging from agricultural crops, via chemically produced drugs to mechanical marvels such as the gramophone) provide a picture of major global transformations in the past 300 years.
