The lecture addresses the fundamentals of river engineering to quantitatively describe the flow of water, transport of sediment and wood, and morphological changes such as erosion and deposition processes associated with river structures. In addition, design guidelines for river engineering structures are introduced.

The main subjects treated are:Fundamentals (e.g. sediment sampling methods), alluvial channel hydraulics. incipient motion, bed forms, bed load and suspended load, sediment budget and morphological changes in river systems, river morphology, scour, river management concepts and selected measures (e.g. bank and bed protection works).A practical exercise is integral part of the lecture.
