The films of great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa are highlights of international filmmaking, especially for their amazing stylistic virtuosity. Highly codified genres such as the Western or the Samurai epic are pleasurably stripped of their conventions. Kurosawa maliciously blurs the boundaries of what is thought to be typically “western” or a typically “eastern” way of seeing.

Of all of cinema's properties, none seems to be more characteristic than editing. Considering the emotional impact of films, especially their manipulative power, examples quickly come to mind which owe their intensity to the process of editing. Over the course of 14 lectures we will closely examine the history and stylistic wealth of editing.
