Introduction to Process Engineering I
Einführung in die Verfahrenstechnik I
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:07:53
Abstract
Overview of process engineering; fundamentals of process engineering; processes and balances; overview of thermal separation processes and multiphase systems. The course "Introduction to Process Engineering I" in the fall semester focuses on thermal process engineering: evaporation, distillation, absorption, crystallization, extraction, and adsorption.
Objective
We teach the fundamentals of process engineering using practical examples as well as concrete process engineering problems in the areas of process control and balancing, and thermal separation processes.
Content
Overview of process engineering; fundamentals of process engineering; processes and balances; overview of thermal separation processes and multiphase systems. In addition to teaching basic theoretical knowledge, the focus is on solving typical problems in various subdisciplines of process engineering. The courses "Introduction to Process Engineering I" and "Introduction to Process Engineering II" (offered in the fall and spring semesters) replace the previous course "Introduction to Process Engineering", while retaining the basic course structure. Dividing the course into two parts allows for a broader and more detailed exploration of the various topics in process engineering. The course "Introduction to Process Engineering II" is offered in the spring semester, with a focus on mechanical and chemical process engineering. The courses "Introduction to Process Engineering I" and "Introduction to Process Engineering II" are not sequential and can be taken independently of one another.
Resources
Lecture Notes
The presentation slides for the lecture will be provided. A script (German language) from HS 2025 (prior to the course restructuring) will be provided for informational purposes but will not be used in class.
Literature
Further literature will be announced during the course. For the successful completion of the course, the slides of the lecture and the exercise materials are sufficient.
