Abstract

For more than twenty years, fictional biographies or biographical fictions have invaded literature, the cinema with biopics, and comic books in the form of graphic novels. In this profusion of works, can we identify new trends in the ways and reasons for writing a life other than one's own? How to distinguish between biography and imagination?

Objective

We will explore this is the vast field by going back to Marcel Schwob's "Vies imaginaires" and Michon's "Vies Minuscules", in order to see the current landscape of life writing take shape. Two themes will guide our reflection: the authenticity of a life, its unitary or multiple character.

What can we know about another life?
