This course provides an introduction to the political system of the European Union. How are decisions taken in the EU? How do the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council interact in the different legislative procedures? What are the main challenges that arise in a multi-level system of governance in terms of efficiency as well as legitimacy?
This course is designed as a ‘refresher’ to elementary statistics for MACIS students. We start off by revising descriptive statistics and basic probability theory. Furthermore, the course will enable you to get a first understanding of hypotheses testing and of bivariate and multivariate regression analysis. The main goal is to prepare MACIS students for the Methods II course in semester two.
This course provides an introduction to the leading theories of regional integration. The theories covered include classics such as neofunctionalism and (liberal) intergovernmentalism but constructivist as well as comparative perspectives on the European Union will also be treated. The theories will be applied to cases of horizontal, vertical and sectoral integration in the European Union.
