Is the Bergell a geographically and economically isolated "chamber" in the border area? A remote place of poetry, but of standstill and resignation, threatened by nature? In our exploratory notes we are interested in the relationship between the landscape and the architecture and their history of ideas.

From our territorial research in Bergell and dealing with process and machine in the last semester, we shift our focus to energy infrastructures in the alpine landscape. They interest us materially and culturally as incisive and permanent form constants in the landscape and architecturally as models of design principles.

Buildings are physical repositories of the history of their time and place. In the Alpine region, various buildings have lost their function and meaning in the course of their lifetime for different reasons of structural change.

The theme of the studio is in the overriding interest for the architectural resource of the housing stock on the outskirts of Switzerland. We are concerned with the conversion of an industrial building that has been disused for decades in the rural context of the Gonzen mine in Sargans. Core topic is dealing with the phenomena of structure and space as a "negotiation" on and with this inventory.
