This course provides an overview of the main natural hazards and their importance in a national and international context. The probability, risk and implications of various natural hazards will be discussed, along with potential management options. The course consists of introductory lectures and exercises, seminars with guest lectures by experts and a field trip.
Introduction to Natural Hazard Management is an integrated approach to hazard assessment and risk management. Students gain an overview and basic working knowledge of the processes, methodology and decisions required to undertake natural hazard risk management for six major hazards that threaten Alpine communities in Switzerland (e.g. landslides, rockfall, torrents, floods, snow avalanches.
