Abstract

The lecture covers regulatory, feedback and control (RFC) mechanisms of Human-Environment Systems on the individual and organizational level. Thereby the theoretical concepts of the HES framework are applied to case studies, among others in the field to of waste-resource management systems.

Objective

After this course students should comprehend: (i) Basic concepts and the methodologies to analyze HES; (ii) Natural and social science approaches to HES; (iii) RFC-mechanisms in different fields of HES (e.g. waste and resource management systems); (iv) basic principles of individual and organizational decision-making in HES. Furthermore, students will learn to: (i) Identify and analyze RFC-mechanisms of HES; (ii) Develop action-alternatives; (iii) Assess alternatives; (iv) Develop starting points for strategy formation.

Content

System theory; HES-framework; regulatory systems (RFC- mechanisms); natural and social science approaches to HES; individual and organizational decision-making; waste- resource management; a specific student case study related to a recent problem in the anthroposphere.
