The image plays a twofold role within philosophy: It is the subject of reflection, but also serves as an operational concept. Selected philosophical positions will be discussed, and the conceptual usefulness of the image for philosophy will be considered, from Plato, Augustine and Cusa, through Kant and Cassirer to Husserl, Bergson, Peirce and Wittgenstein.
