Students develop and build a product from A-Z! They work in teams and independently, learn to structure problems, to identify solutions, system analysis and simulations, as well as presentation and documentation techniques. They build the product with access to a machine shop and state of the art engineering tools (Matlab, Simulink, etc).

This studio explores our values toward natural materials by examining them at various scales. We’ll compare modern and premodern materials like concrete vs. stone, gypsum board vs. earth, and industrial lumber vs. solid timber as well as differences in their applications, consideration of the factors that drove material transitions, and the relationship between the site and sources of materials.

hat opportunities arise for our cities when buildings and neighbourhoods are designed bottom-up, from the urban-ground upwards?New design approaches are developed based on an understanding of the forces at work. The setting is the Leepünt site in Dübendorf. During a temporary residency at the Architekturforum Zürich, we work directly with and in the city at eye level.

In the semester, we ask: is there also an ecological form of temporariness? Temporary architectures reflect our growing need for lightness, freedom, independence, and flexibility. Their provisional nature, speed, adaptability, and simplicity seem much more in line with increasing mobility and multiple lifestyles.
