Architectural Design IV: Space of Accumulation
Entwurf IV: Raum der Akkumulation (Christ/Gantenbein)
What will the storage space of tomorrow look like?Designing a project in four steps:1. Envisioning scenarios about the future of storage and accumulation.2. Design of a spatial system to the scenario.3. Translating the system into an architectural structure in recycled construction materials.4. Developing of the real project.
Architectural Design IV: The University and the City (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
Entwurf IV: Die Universität und die Stadt (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
In the second semester we will confront our ideas of an Ideal Architecture with the complexity of a real project in Switzerland. Through visionary and speculative scenarios we ask ourselves what spaces are needed for learning and studying. Following a complementary methodology we will design buildings and infrastructures for the expanding University of Basel.
RE-Thinking-RENevertheless, the RE-prefix. In all its newfound ambitions and its very first fragile exercises in recent decades. Yet a critical RE-considering is not wrong now, or early at all. To keep pace with the idea that RE-USE should be more and should be part of RE-attitude. So just to be more than physical RE-use and rather to be physical RE-attitude.
The 33.3%-STUDIO will explore the possibilities of a more restrained, humble but precise action. This is in many ways an attitude of economy of means. Less energy of action, of course, means less economy and ecology, but it could also require changing the attitude of use effectively today. This could also make it a question of ergonomics: how to USE the given context differently and yet act less.
The 33.3%-STUDIO explores the possibilities of a humble but precise act. In FS23 we look at zones of small-scale houses that will be replaced by multi-family houses. If this tendency continues, the consequences for the city are drastic. How can we intervene into these zones with a smaller but more precise act? How can we project a future beyond the well-known strategies of total replacement?
This studio work on the idea of PRAC-TEACH. How PRACTICE and TEACHING relates.A PRACTICE OF THE SCHOOL lends 3 projects available for CHANGE – OBSERVATION – REFLECTION – IMAGINATION.This studio will be held 7 semesters, each HS.For the PILOT SEMESTER the PRACTICE BEHIND will be ours.
The studio is organised in two movements. The aim is to understand the relation between the making—construction, material and detail—and the meaning—context, culture and tradition—. At the start of Movement 1, the students are divided into groups of 3 persons. In Movement 2, the studio shifts towards individual work.
These strange times. For weeks we stayed at home and could really experience what it is like to be at home, experiencing it differently over time. Objects we knew very well turned out not to be known enough. Habits could be deciphered. Discovering unexplored movements. This studio wants to start from those daily experiences.

Learning from Bologna
Entwurf III: Lernen von Bologna (E.Christ/Ch.Gantenbein)
The first semester begins with a field trip to Bologna. Collectively we develop a survey of selected examples through inspired drawings. During the second half of the semester we engage with the project of student accommodation. The selected case studies become the objects of intervention: different strategies of adaptive reuse are explored and confronted with the condition of the city at large.
