Separations play an integral part of any biotechnological process. This course aims at enabling students from various backgrounds (process engineering, biotechnology) to select and design suitable separation processes for typical biotechnological products such as monoclonal antibodies, antibiotics, and fine chemicals.

Project-based introduction into synthetic biology for students with a background in either biology OR in quantitative sciences (engineering, comp. sc., mathematics, etc). First, we will teach each of the two cohorts separately in the part which they are (most) lacking. In the second half, interdisciplinary teams will apply their knowledge to reviewing and improving biological design projects.

7 months biological design project, during which the students are required to give presentations on advanced topics in synthetic biology (specifically genetic circuit design) and then select their own biological system to design. The system is subsequently modeled, analyzed, and experimentally implemented. Results are presented at an international student competition at the MIT (Cambridge).
