Students are invited to collect new publications of interest (books, articles, essays, blogs, etc.) in the topic history and philosophy of knowledge and present them in the seminar for discussion.

Paul K. Feyerabend characterized his magnum opus “Against method” as an “anarchistic theory of knowledge”. In this book, he crusaded against analytical philosophy of science and critical rationalism. Feyerabend’s advocating for a variety of forms of knowledge has been debated heatedly, but is still relevant for contextualizing the role of science in society.

This seminar is devoted to the role of photography in art and science since its beginnings in 1839. We will read selected texts on the theory of photography and analyse photographs for getting an overview over its fascinating history.

Since the 1920’s science fiction has become a specific genre. Works of literture like the novels of S. Lem or movies such as „The Matrix“ deal with future worlds but at the same time they refer to contemporary science: Science fiction mirrors, alienates or criticizes current scientific practice. The seminar will explore such relationships in works of literature and film.
