This is the last semester of our six years of artistic research titled MATERIAL GESTURE. The research on material gesture wishes to shift the focus towards the processes of working with a material and its resulting gestures in order to define a specific expression and spatial formation of architecture.
This studio works on the idea that a substantial understanding oftodays technology (internet of things, big data, machineintelligence...) changes the perspective to architectural theoryand will result in different architectural designs and buildingconstructions.

This semester, looking carefully at the layers of materiality, construction, detailing, context, actors and uses, together, we will be building material.
The studio investigates a contemporary version of a cabin with an “extended bed” and a field understood as a different public realm. These two architectural conditions even if still unnamed, show already existing tensions of the social sphere produced while different relations occur between users and the network.
Every building is the result of a competitive system. This semester we are embracing Mutual Aid! It will offer students the chance to deepen their storytelling and visual production skills while gaining a comprehensive understanding of the systemic preconditions of architecture.
Architectural Design V-IX: Natural Habitat (GD O.Lütjens/T.Padmanabhan)
Entwurf V-IX: Natural Habitat (GD O.Lütjens/T.Padmanabhan)
In the design studio EVERYTHING YOU NEED, will work on new cooperative apartment buildings along the train tracks between Zurich and Olten.
Architectural Design V-IX: New Centers (Caminada)
Entwurf V-IX: Neue Zentren (Caminada)
Centers have defined life in our towns and villages for centuries. Important decisions were made in these public places. The centers were both market and meeting place. The formal structural character was also clearly in a hierarchy that offered orientation in the built context.
Architectural Design V-IX: New City Landscapes - Focal Points of Urban Densification (M. Brakebusch)
Entwurf V-IX: Neue Stadtlandschaften - Brennpunkte urbaner Verdichtung (M. Brakebusch)
The global phenomenon of rising temperatures as a result of climate change requires, based on local conditions, individual solutions for the increasingly heated and dense urban space. The heat reduction programs presented describe fields of action and approaches that are targeted at specific points and that remain at the political and administrative boundaries.
"New Ecologies" is dedicated to the practice of architecture in the post-anthropocentric era. In this semester we will look at Zurich and its region beyond-the-built, concentrating on agriculture.

With the help of cartographic and statistical surveys, digital and analog, we figure out the limits of the individual metropolitan areas with regard to their possible compression and cooling. After an initial deep drilling in Zurich (in HS20), we will continue with the investigations in the Basel metropolitan area in FS21.
